The story
I have chronic lyme and have had it for 13 years. A year ago I contracted bartonella in the summer of 2025, and around that time also some gastroenteritis, with bloody stools which messed me up. I lost 12kg in 6 weeks around that time. I tried to treat post-gastroenteritis with high doses of general lactobifido mix probiotics, ended up being extremely bloated, sibo-like. Got rifaximin, did not work, actually worsened it and increased insane acidic feeling in my lower abdomen, right under my belly button, which felt as if acid was dissolving my intestines from the inside. I was getting really fast neurological decline around that time, kept losing weight despite my caloric intake being sufficient, and nearly cutting out carbs did not help much. In a desperate attempt I took amoxicilin without clavunate, for which I decided based on finding suspecitibility studies of the said probiotics. It cleared bloating and stopped weight loss within a few days. Weight loss was probably from bartonella (can cause rapid weight loss in acute phase), and while amoxicilin does not work well intracellularly, it probably killed enough bartonella to stop the acute phase.
I then spent half a year around doctors looking to treat lyme and bartonella, taking a few antibiotics, which helped, some a lot (ceftriaxone), some somewhat, but before I was able to start a full treatment I ate a big jar of kimchi with fish sauce at once at the turn of the year. It basically reactivated the same symptoms: bloating right under my belly button, carb intolerance. Endless bloating. I took fluconazole which helped with general malaise, so yeast probably could have played a role, but did nothing re bloating. Then I tried rifaximin for 3x14 days courses this half a year, each time it helped cut symptoms by like 60-70%, but never got fully flattened abdomen. I bought Aire 2, first had only h2 elevated, after first rifaximin course methane started to appear as well. I had a negative glucose breath test in June. Around the turn of June/July, I got c.jejuni, which cleared my methane. However I am still bloating right now, and will be trying further atb treatment, this time systemic antibiotics, as my bartonella and lyme caused symptoms have progresed including vision issues. I will update what happens.
My main symptoms rn are: constant bloating right under the belly button that only goes away when I did not eat for 2 days during c.jejuni and during preparation for a SIBO test.
