Last reported: About 10 months of relief

Ten months of relief after the elemental diet

Story summary

IBS-D symptoms began in 2018 with diarrhea, bloating, gas, nausea, tenesmus, disrupted sleep, and low mood. Nutritionist-guided work eventually identified hydrogen-dominant SIBO. After three weeks on an elemental diet, the contributor reported a negative breath test and about 10 months of relief—an unusually durable stretch after years of symptoms.

Last reported: Improved over five months

Thirty years. Then a 100 ppm methane result.

Story summary

After 30 years of daily stomach bloating and chronic constipation, the author improved their 100 ppm methane SIBO (IMO) over five months using herbal antimicrobials instead of further antibiotics, while managing Candida with diet, biofilm busters, and antifungal supplements.

Last reported: Symptoms noticeably eased

Five negative breath tests—and one missed finding

Story summary

Severe bloating and brain fog continued despite five negative SIBO breath tests. The finding that changed the direction of the story came later, when capsule endoscopy revealed a biofilm in the ileum that standard testing had missed. Biofilm disruptors used with simethicone were then linked with noticeable symptom relief.

Last reported: Methane and symptoms reduced

PHGG joined the next antibiotic round

Story summary

After years of ineffective herbal antimicrobials, two antibiotic rounds combined with PHGG powder progressively lowered methane levels from high to low, reducing bloating and histamine symptoms while improving energy.

Last reported: Clear improvement reported

Eighteen years of IBS-D. Antibiotics weren’t the answer.

Story summary

For 18 years, painful IBS-D and severe diarrhea persisted. A positive hydrogen breath test led to antibiotics, but the contributor reported no relief. The improvement came from a different direction: eliminating manufactured citric acid calmed the diarrhea, and vitamin B1 was linked with a further clear improvement.

What this dataset can establish

  • The cohort contains 1,303 published stories associated with the SIBO breath-test pattern.
  • Result tabs use exact published diagnosis labels; suspected causes are presented separately as an overall cohort until a safe gas-specific aggregate is available.
  • Test and diagnosis rows overlap and cannot be added into prevalence.
  • Lab protocols and report criteria are not standardized across every story.
  • Treatment outcomes preserve what contributors reported but cannot establish efficacy or causation.

Small subgroup

Among 51 breath-test-confirmed reports, PPIs were reported to make symptoms worse about one-third of the time. This small, self-reported pattern does not prove causation.

Questions about SIBO breath-test results

What does a SIBO breath test measure?

It measures gases in exhaled breath after a test sugar, commonly hydrogen and methane and sometimes hydrogen sulfide. The pattern and timing are interpreted using the lab’s protocol.

Can a breath test be negative even when symptoms continue?

Yes. A negative result means the test did not meet the lab’s criteria. It does not explain every ongoing symptom, and test limitations or another condition may still matter.

Does a positive result tell me what treatment will work?

No. It may inform the next clinical conversation, but patient-reported outcomes remain mixed even among the most common next steps.

Is methane SIBO the same as IMO?

Methane elevation is commonly described as intestinal methanogen overgrowth, or IMO, because methanogens are not bacteria. Use the terminology and criteria on the lab report.

Are these medical results?

No. GutPattern organizes patient-reported stories for comparison. It does not diagnose, prescribe, or recommend treatment.
